Learning Targets:
To produce a work of art that communicates an aspect of where you are from for the purpose of examining the relationship between your identity and the communities that you are a part of.
To produce a work of art that communicates an aspect of your identify for the purpose of strengthening a sense of community within the class.
Materials: Where I’m From poem for each student, assorted materials for creating art objects
Lesson Plan: Ice Breaker:
Ask students to read the poem to themselves.
Do a shared reading.
Ask students, “What do you notice?” See where the discussion goes.
Step by Step Activities:
Ask students to create or manipulate an object that conveys an aspect of where you are from.
Think of this as an object that would express a line from your Where I’m From poem.
Wrap: Critique
Each student presents his/her artwork to the class.
Students share constructive feedback about how effectively the artist conveyed the information he/she set out to communicate through their art object.
